3 Surefire Ways to Cut the Cord and Their Benefits

Internet Providers

Top Rated Shows

Are you tired of very high prices, hidden fees, as well as the customer service that several satellite and cable cum internet providers offer? What about programming packages with channels you do not really need? Then, it may be high time for you to cut the cord.

For years, big broadcasting companies and cable TV providers have had the exclusive rights to carry a number of premium channels on their TV platforms. As a result, they were the means for audiences to access their desired programs, but that is no longer the case.

Nowadays, you do not necessarily require a cable service or subscription to receive these TV channels. In case you need content for free, one of the best ways for that is to go the free streaming route. In case you need regular TV programs for a relatively cheaper price, then you could subscribe to one or more streaming services.

As you can see, there are a few cord cutting options for you. Let us take a closer look at what each of them comprises.

Option One: Antenna

In the era of cord cutting, television antennas are back in style! An antenna lets you get TV shows from over-the-air (OTA) channels. You simply have to connect either an indoor antenna or outdoor antenna to your TV set to get programs from any network-affiliate or local channels.

In case you need to get free programs from your preferred networks, then this is the ideal way to do it. It is also one of the simplest methods to cut the cord. However, it is important to note that a customer having an analog TV set might have to use a “converter box” for digital.

Option Two: Streaming

Cable TV Providers

Streaming TV Services

Streaming basically means you can access TV shows and movies over the web. With this method, you do not need to have satellite or cable services, or a TV antenna. However, you do require a speedy internet connection that is suited for your data usage.

Most internet providers give information about speed tier plans and what they are suited for, on their websites, so customers can easily choose plans as per their data consumption patterns or requirements.

Option Three: Antenna Plus Streaming

This is the priciest option for cord cutters. Still, it allows you to access free local channels over the air, while still letting you get more content over the web. This is also an ideal option as it brings a lot of content that you get to watch on-demand.

Charter Spectrum® and Cox® Bring Gigabit Speed to San Diego

Cheap Internet

Internet Speed Upgradation

Recently, the top internet and cable TV providers in the US increased their internet speeds to gigabit in San Diego County in order to let subscribers handle growing requirements of data. The modern-day customers require speedy internet plans to access videos over several streaming platforms. That is why the cable operators are coming up with speed upgrades to the millions of households.

You might be a San Diego County resident having a cheap internet connection from any of the ISPs. Note that Comcast®, Cox®, and Charter Spectrum® have upgraded the service to gigabit speeds, so you have more options access the internet. Cox® said that the gigabit speed internet is now available in ninety-four percent of the coverage area in the county. However, Charter Spectrum® started offering the speeds back in April inside their San Diego footprint, which usually lies to its northern parts Interstate 8 and extends to Rancho Bernardo community as well as Carlsbad.

The high-speed internet is highly demanded by customers and with newer methods to stream videos over the web, ISPs can only come up with best practices such as speed upgrades and other methods to access the same. “We know YouTube is consuming a ton of data,” said the Cox® VP of Market for West Region, Suzanne Schlundt. “But there are also a lot of other devices in people’s homes.”

The gigabit internet speeds can let customers download an HD movie in a minute, a hundred songs in 3 seconds, and around 1000 photos in 60 seconds. “It used to take almost as long to download a movie as it did to watch it when you were getting ready to go on a flight,” Schlundt said. “With this, you can do it so much faster.”

San Diego is amongst the cities with a latent demand for over-the-top or OTT video streaming from a cheap internet service provider. Many of the residential subscribers in the area have internet-supported streaming devices, which can be connected to the TV sets to stream videos.

Gigabit internet is the latest connectivity option that offers an alternative way to stream. No wonder the internet and cable TV providers are upgrading the download and upload speeds. Besides, these companies have been upgrading the networks to support the DOCSIS 3.1 standard in 2018. It provides gigabit internet connections without having to rely on fiber lines to each residence.

Subscribers Will Start Moving to Xfinity® Mobile Indicate Research

Best Internet Providers

Xfinity® Mobile Service

According to the findings of New Street Research firm, the wireless service known as Xfinity® Mobile is set to have significant growth in the number of subscribers in the next two years. To be specific, the research firm projected that the MVNO service, which one of the best internet providers deliver through the network of Verizon Wireless®, would get twice number of subscribers in this year’s fourth quarter compared to last year.

“We expect Comcast’s wireless net adds to remain sluggish in the first half of 2018, and then to ramp sharply in the second half of the year,” noted New Street Research officials. The research firm also disclosed several other revelations in their report as mentioned below.

  • Comcast® now pays Verizon® $5 per gigabyte data its subscribers use, although it is subject to change and is not fixed
  • Xfinity® Mobile subscribers use around 15 percent more internet data than similar subs
  • Cable providers, in general, will get up to fifteen percent of total postpaid subscribers in their targeted markets by 2020 and it would steal customers of rivaling wireless providers such as AT&T® and T-Mobile®

Findings of the research firm are startling in view of Comcast’s disclosure that Xfinity® Mobile service had signed up 380,000 subscriber lines by 2017. Although that was an increase from 250,000 subscribers as disclosed by Comcast® in October, it was below the figures most trade analysts had projected last year.

Nevertheless, executives of Comcast® have promised that Xfinity® Mobile is on track to grow. David N. Watson, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Cable®, said in January, “We like our game plan. We like the fact that it’s connected to our existing business line. It’s a really simple business plan that can scale. We’re finding that the by-the-gig approach is working. It’s early still the branding is just kicking in, and we’re expanding distribution to our existing retail locations. We’re well positioned going into 2018 with mobile.”

Xfinity® Mobile, the wireless service Comcast® that delivers over Verizon’s network, is “very irrelevant, and I assume that [Charter’s soon-to-launch mobile service] will be irrelevant squared,” said the Chief Executive Office of T-Mobile®, John Legere, in February. “The furthest thing from my mind is any concern about the impact of cable.”
